University of Education Karlsruhe

The beginnings of teacher training in Karlsruhe go back as far as 1757. The University of Education in its present form was established in 1962, and some 3,000 students study here, being taught by some 180 teaching personnel.
As an educational institution of higher education, Karlsruhe University has the right to grant doctoral and post-doc research (“habilitation”) degrees.
Theory-based and practice-oriented, international and interdisciplinary teacher education for primary, elementary and secondary schools is the university’s most important task nowadays. Particular emphasis is placed on the European teacher degree, which was introduced in 1999, Germany's first undergraduate degree program with a focus on bilingual teaching and learning in the target languages (English and French). Bachelor and Master programs, in addition to teacher preparation courses, supplement the courses offered.
Research at the University of Education is both fundamental and application-oriented. It focuses on research in education, teaching and schools as well as in didactics of various subjects.
The impartial handling of modern media technologies by students and the ever-shorter innovation cycles in the entertainment industry are posing major challenges for teacher education at universities.
Karlsruhe University of Education takes these developments in society into account and is thus setting new priorities in its research and teaching with the LIVE-concept (Learning in Virtual Environments).
We are analyzing current media trends such as stereoscopic or 3D graphics, high immersive virtual reality (VR), and voice and gesture recognition in terms of a meaningful application in the classroom and in this regard are developing new learning and teaching concepts. The findings from our research projects such as "Virtual reality in biology classes" and EVEIL-3D (www.eveil-3d.eu) flow directly into our teaching and thus into the content of current and future educational programs.
